Authors We've Read and Their American Voice

Your group has been assigned an author/authors.  *Dickinson and Bradstreet (Kajsa’s), Whitman (Rhiana’s), Thoreau and Emerson (Jordyn’s and Maddie’s), William Carlos Williams and other modern poets (Hallie’s and Mark’s)

You need to find the notes/information you have on that author/authors and answer these questions about their American Voice.  Make sure one of you types up the answers as a comment to this post, but all of you write it down in your notes.

*Overall Question: How does their writing exemplify the (or an) American voice?
*How does their writing show America at their point in time?
*What does their writing say about people and society?
*Thinking of all, what aspect(s) of America are not reflected with the voices so far?

Once you have posted these ideas, work on your current poet research.  If you have any questions, email me as I'm over at the middle school and can answer questions easily if emailed...

  1. Walt Whitman exemplifies the American voice because he writes without worrying about what society will think of his poems. Walt Whitman reflected on the killing of Abraham Lincoln and the end of the Civil War with his poem "Oh Captain! My Captain!" That people in society should pay attention to and appreciate the little things. The slavery issue is not represented in any of his poems.

  2. Someone who writes freely knowing they can express themselves without persecution.
*Overall Question: How does their writing exemplify the (or an) American voice?
Bradstreet was upfront and openly religious. She was okay with speaking her mind and being open with who she was. Dickinson chose a different path than her parents, which was being very religious. It was okay to do this because of the freedom we have in America. She has the freedom to express herself which she shows through her writing.
*How does their writing show America at their point in time?
In The Burning Of Our House, Bradstreet talks about God a lot and that shows what's going on in her time. God was a big thing then, and he still is. She is just showing that God is a big part. It is also showing how depressing this time was. Dickinson also shows house depressing life was through her poetry.
*What does their writing say about people and society?
Dickinson shows that people conform to society. Bradstreet shows traditional thoughts and styles of writing. This shows that stick to their traditions.
*Thinking of all, what aspect(s) of America are not reflected with the voices so far?
The good side of America. They are all talking America down and only showing the bad side of America. It is also not showing diversity. They don't write about how diverse America is.

  3. Thoreau's writing shows America at their time by using the freedom of speech throughout his piece, "Civil Disobedience." He also shows the idea of people being the ones to run the government and how that would be the best option for the county rather than listening to those bias views of the government. In Emerson's writing, he shows freedom and individuality. He shows how each individual person is in control and they should not waver from that control. He shows his views of wanting lack of conformity and consistency, the freedom of the people needed. Both of their writings say that people need to become individuals, not conform to society. They also say that society itself is overrated and should not be in control of the people since their influence is not individualistic, rather it is far from what humanity is aiming to become. The aspects of America not reflected are the lack of respect for citizens, caring for each other as neighbors, and the welfare used to help people out.

    Thoreau and Emerson:
    1. Thoreau shows the American voice because he uses his freedom of speech in his writings, "Civil Disobedience" in particular, and changes individuals' views on the government and war. Emerson shows American voice because he lead the Transcendentalism movement which changed America's views on writing.
    2. Thoreau and Emerson showed America at the time by their writing. America's government and the war is talked about by Thoreau and shows America as being corrupt in a way. Emerson shows that Americans need to be more self-reliant and that America needs to stay away from materialism.
    3. Their writing says that people should not conform to society, but live a life that is simple and a life that differs from society. Their writing also says that individuals should value nature and be self-reliant.
    4. Aspects of America that are not reflected in the voices so far are the government's viewpoints of society, not just individuals that are affected by the government.

  5. William Carlos Williams shows the American voice when he talks about the changing of the seasons. The changing of the seasons resembles new things coming and this can be connected to the changing of America into a country that gives freedom and equality to its individuals. Also other poets at this time show the American voice when they speak of getting married and choosing who they marry which was an idea involved in the American dream. They also speak about how America is learning to stand alone and become a superior country.

These poets show the idea of America at their time by writing in free verse, because this showed them attempting to make a change in how poetry was written during this era of change. Also you see ideas of hopelessness and there is a depressing mood throughout many of these poems which was common during the era that they wrote in.

The poets at this time say that people in society at this time were viewed as really nobody. Poets were questioning the idea of individualism at the time so authors made this sound doubtful in their writing.

Poets of this time are yet to speak about the invention of new technology or reflect on the idea of slavery. Also they don't talk about the great depression yet which occurred during their era of writing.
