Friday, May 27 Agenda

*         Perspective Journals due Tuesday: should have 1-16,
17-29, 30-52, 53-65, 66-83, 84-end {full page} (or 84-98 and 99-end)
*         Share best points (Q 1- 8 & Focus Pts) with large group (from yesterday)
*         End of book discussion with small groups
*         End of Book Questions (Q#9 +)
*         Foreshadowing, Figurative Language, Symbolism, and Tragic Hero (talk about these things)
*         Work on questions, literary terms notes (foreshadowing, similes, metaphors, symbols), big idea notes –all need to be done by Tuesday
*         Big Idea Notes Sheet: Make sure for American Dream and one of your other two big ideas that you have a theme connected to that idea and two pieces of textual evidence that show each one perfectly (WITH PAGE NUMBER).
HINT: Could you answer an essay question that asked “How is this Big Idea shown in the novella?”
*         2:45…Introduce Final Paper  
*         you should know of what stories you are analyzing and have copies of them by end of day today

Thursday, May 27 Agenda

*         Bell Ringer: Perspective Journals… should be done with #5 (66-83)
*         Pass your perspective journal to another class member. Read through your peer’s entry, checking that they have done it correctly: labeled which pages for section and which character, written in the voice of the character, covered the thoughts and feelings of character of all of the main things that happened in that chapter
*         With small group, go through the big idea sheet and discuss where the different ideas have been seen (start with Am. Dream, be specific, page numbers/textual evidence always helpful).
*         Assessment on OMM coming soon (best guess=Wednesday/Thursday)
*         This will focus on the Big Ideas tied to THEMES and Textual Evidence
*         With the same small group, work on discussing and then jotting down answers to questions (1-8), especially questions 5 and 7 on sheet then add your opinions on these questions: Why doesn’t Curley’s wife get a name? What could Steinbeck be saying by not giving Curley’s wife a name but giving the cathouse runners names? Or is it just trying to make something out of nothing that she has no name and they do? Explain why you think what you do.
*         Add this to the ‘power’ question (8) on sheet: Why does Curley’s wife verbally attack Crooks the way she does at the end of section 4?
*         HW: Read Section 5 and 6: finish book for tomorrow

*         HW: Perspective journal #6: either half page for 5 and half for 6 (switching perspectives), or full page for both together (one person’s perspective)… All six journals due TUESDAY.

*         Bell Ringer: In Writer’s Notebook: George says that guys like them, who work on ranches are “the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck 13).  What is his reasoning behind the statement?  Do you agree? Why/why not? How does the idea of “belonging” relate to this statement and Lennie and George’s relationship and their position in life so far? –bring to me when done
*         Write perspective journal #3 on 30-53, when done with WN entry
*         Finish up / Start small group discussion from yesterday: what you still had from the sheet, then talking about conflicts and posting on Schoology –also discuss things from the reading last night (43-53)
*         Share your best point from your 3rd perspective journal as you are talking about details from the homework reading (43-53)
*         Similes, Metaphors, Foreshadowing, Symbols –notes for these will be online in Schoology, so maybe mark (annotate) where you see them and then add to online notes during small group discussions
*         Big Idea Discussion: talk about what you have traced for big ideas so far and then as a group, post a specific detail or piece of textual evidence (with page number) to three of the big idea boards on Schoology
*         Conflict Types and examples with your group, then post to the boards on Schoology (not just char. Name vs. char. Name, but names with how that specific conflict is playing out)

*         Homework: Section 3 start on page 43 read to page 53 (“the door opened”)
*         Things to pay attention to when reading: Big idea examples, any examples of symbols, similes, metaphors, personification, foreshadowing, and conflicts

*         Conflicts: come up with examples of how each type of conflict is seen while or after reading to prepare for discussion tomorrow

Instructions: Perspective Journal Entries from the perspective of George or Lennie on events:
o   Needs to be at least half page 
o   Both a summary of what happened in the section through the character’s eyes and the character’s opinions and thoughts on the events
o   In the character’s voice that you have chosen (can switch for each section, or stay the same)

*         List one detail (textual evidence) from the story for each of the five senses (on back of sheet)
*        WEDNESDAY: Begin “American Dream…American Conflict”

*         Emulation poem: on rubric, write down what 3-4 devices are you emulating that should be evaluated (if you didn’t already)
*         Am Voice Poem: on rubric, write what devices you used that I am looking for to evaluate if you want (this helps me see what you were aiming to accomplish, thus being able to grade it better)
*       American Gothic- Notes on Gothic Literature: Looks at humanity’s attempt to supersede nature, spiritual and emotional disconnect from nature: “men have become the tools of their tools” and “things are in the saddle and ride mankind”
*      Southern Gothic: “A Rose for Emily”
*         Answer questions from the sheet on a separate piece of paper to turn in.  Can work with partner on questions/timeline. Due Friday.

QUESTIONS FOR “A Rose for Emily”
While reading, keep track of information to help you answer these questions/prompts:
  1. Mood- feeling or atmosphere created by the author
    1. How does the diction (word choice), imagery and figurative language create a mood? What is the overall mood? (a piece of textual evidence in this answer would be best)
  2. Order in which events revealed vs. order in which events occur: Only make the list of how it is in the story, we will organize the chronological list on Friday.
    1. Ex.
1. Emily dies, everyone wants to see the house.
2. Taxes Issue (col. Sartorious, younger generations trying to collect.
3. The next event/idea talked about in the story

    1. After completing the sequencing, why do you think Faulkner chose to manipulate the sequence this way? What would the story lose if it was told traditionally?
