ReplyDeleteCharacteristics:
-Good vs Evil
-Metaphors
-Story Telling
-Symbolism
Purpose of Storys: Showing the injustice of the white people to the Native Americans
Authors Attitude: He was most likely on Thomas' side because of the way the story was written, and he was against the government because of him receiving a life sentence to prison for standing up for himself and Native Americans
3 Important Things Talked About
-Symbolism of his name, symbolic for leading a movement and building the fire.
-The Native Americans were punished for the injustice of the white man.
-The rest of the Native Americans were killed while he stood up and fought for what he believed in, just like Thomas did in the trial which was standing up for what he believed in until the very end.
1. visions/stories, oral tradition, European cruelty, connection with animals, personifications
ReplyDelete2. metaphors are that the ponies are the Indians, and that Thomas Builds-a-Fire is not one person but many people telling their story after 20 years of a cultural silence.
3. We were confused as to whether the horses were people or actual horse.
4. The purpose of the story is to explain the Indians conflict with the Europeans, and to tell the story to inform, instruct and warn people of the problems they faced a society.
5. 3 important things we talked about were that he didn't talk for 20 year, because of the cultural silence, and how his words held meaning when he did speak, how his name Thomas Builds a Fire stood for the conflict between the Europeans and the rising conflict, and that he wasn't one person, but many sharing their stories and the horrors they faced.

ReplyDeleteCharacteristics: Metaphors/Symbolism, Hero Myth (Thomas with Esther),Hyperbole, and Good vs. Evil.
What's the authors purpose of the story? He told this story to show the brutality between Whites and Native Americans. He also showed that no matter how hard the Whites tried, they couldn't destroy the traditions, beliefs, spirit, and culture within the Native American reservations.
What's the Author's attitude toward Thomas Builds-the-Fire? He believes that he is the victim. Although he murdered two soldiers he was viewed innocent and meaningful, especially for his stories.
Attitude towards the Gov.? They are ruthless, and always believe that they are right even when they have done most of the wrongdoing. He also believes that they are selfish, especially because the amount of land they've taken away from the Native Americans.
Three insightful things talked about: Thomas is viewed as a hero, because of his influence towards Esther to leave her abusive husband, just through his stories.
Connecting to the first, Esther's husband, David WalksAlong believed that because his property (Esther) was stolen from him by Thomas, that he should be put in jail. But then when his trial came, he was convicted/ put in jail for something else, murder of two soldiers who were also trying to kill him.
Thomas is so powerful that when he simply makes noises, he is much more powerful than the government(The people who have total power) .

ReplyDeleteSome myth characteristics that we found in this story were the idea of a hero such as Thomas, Wild Coyote, Qualchan, and the horses for putting up a fight for their beliefs. The BIA could be considered a trickster/villain like in myth stories because they exploited Thomas. Thomas told a story from a ponies perspective that could be classified as personification because the pony had feelings of fear and had nightmares, and thoughts of family. There was oral tradition because Thomas had to have heard the stories he told the court from past people he knew. There was extreme exaggeration because the court called him am murderer but he was only protecting himself.
The authors purpose of the story was to show the racism, inequality, and unfair treatment of Native Americans. The authors attitude towards Thomas seemed to be in Thomas's favor because it portrayed him as a hero and an honorable person. The author attitude towards the BIA as mean and unfair people who tried to destroy the natives history.
We talked about how how the trial took place in the 1980's but Thomas told stories that took place during 1858. We talked about how the Qualchan site told the full story of the events Thomas spoke of.
We also talked about how unfair the court was being to Thomas and the unfair treatment of Indians in general.

ReplyDeleteSome characteristics of the story that showed resemblance to Native American myths are Personification, Lots of metaphor, hyperbole, symbolism, deeper meaning, repetition, and teaching a lesson.
The main purpose of the story was to show the flawed nature of the justice system, like racism especially. The author's attitude toward Thomas is that he is the only one who understands and is aware of the mistreatment of Native Americans. Also the author feels that the BIA/ government is prejudiced and basically racist in the determining of their penalties.
3 things we talked about:
The character's last names were a representation of their personalities, for example, Builds-the-fire shows that Thomas was creates support through stories or laying foundation from past events to strengthen the people with his words.
The quote from Thomas, "Is that real justice, or the idea of justice?" is possibly a theme of this story, showing that the judges were not completely fair towards Thomas when determining his guiltiness.
The ponies could have been a representation of the people's spirits or souls
