Monday, Jan. 7 Agenda

*Bell Ringer: “To a Mouse” (where the title of the book comes from)

*Read through all TQE posts on Edublogs: any additional ideas to discuss? 

*Assessment tomorrow: need two themes with two pieces of evidence each

*Summary vs. Analysis –find this handout and re-read it

*Work on Body paragraphs

*Remember to follow TIQA while writing, or at least remember to analyze each quote –explain why/how it proves your point

*Each body paragraph should have at least 2 quotes with in-text citations. 

*No first person pronouns! (unless in a direct quote)

*If you finish your body paragraphs, work on your introduction

*When you have a draft that you are ready to confer about, upload it to Turnitin and sign up for a conference for tomorrow.

*Remember, Turnitin doesn’t update in real time, so only upload it when you aren’t going to work on it more (and you have all of your body paragraphs drafted)

*PUT YOUR THESIS AS THE FIRST SENTENCE OF YOUR PAPER (unless you have written an intro, in which case, the thesis should be the last line of the intro)

Friday, Jan. 4 Agenda

*Bell Ringer: Writer’s Workshop

*Today you should be finishing your outline (if you haven’t yet) and then starting the rough draft of your body paragraphs

*Each main point on the outline should have at least 2 quotes with in-text citations. 

*Your goal is to fully prove your complete thesis with in-depth analysis for BOTH stories: you should be proving a similar theme, potentially other similarities, and contrasting the stories either only through era characteristics, or also through theme treatment

*Most of the papers will have the comparing be the theme and the contrasting be the era specifics, but the strongest papers will go more in-depth on both the theme and the era (potentially similarities and differences for both)

*Work on Body paragraphs

*Remember to follow TIQA while writing, or at least remember to analyze each quote –explain why/how it proves your point

*Each body paragraph should have approx. 2 quotes with in-text citations.

*End of book discussion with small group

*Share annotations from Wednesday night/yesterday (if you didn’t finish yesterday)

*Steinbeck’s craft of writing (Foreshadowing, Figurative Language, Symbolism, Tragic Hero, structure of novel, purpose of characters, effects of conflicts, etc.) -talk about these things, maybe use some for your Es

Friday, Dec. 21 Agenda

*With small group, talk about **and POST specific examples of big ideas (3), literary devices (2), and the four types of conflicts in the book so far.  Then go through the big idea sheet and discuss where the other big ideas have been seen (start with Am. Dream, be specific, page numbers/textual evidence always helpful **ADD TO ONES EVEN IF YOU AREN’T TRACING).

*Assessment on OMM coming after break

*This will focus on the Big Ideas tied to THEMES and Textual Evidence

*Things to discuss: big idea examples (esp Am Dream and the plans of the pair), literary devices (esp symbols), character details (who is everyone? How are the characters used/going to be used), conflict types, plot points, Modern Era characteristics

*Post on the whiteboard your ideas AFTER you’ve discussed for 15-20 (NOT before)

*Read through other group’s posts, add more ideas/questions/etc. to their ideas

*Prepare for large group by reading through all boards

*George says that guys like them, who work on ranches are “the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck 13).  What is his reasoning behind the statement?  Do you agree? Why/why not? How does the idea of individuals needing a place to belong relate to this statement and Lennie and George’s relationship and their position in life so far? –submit to Google Classroom assignment

*Needs to fulfill the standards on the document shared with you

*Can be done independently, with a person who also read your book, or with someone else (but then you will need to talk about both books)

*If you are working with someone, talk with them now to come up with ideas

*There is a Product Ideas sheet shared with you (it also has links that may come in handy).  If you are struggling with coming up with ideas, take a look here.
